...commentary from plate pamphlet from another issue of this plate (Commemorative Stamps Issue) "Even before the war began, freedom of speech was stripped away in Nazi Germany. Then as Hitler pushed west across Europe, opinions were silenced in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Denmark and France. So Norman Rockwell's "Freedom of Speech" painting made Americans-who were still free- doubly thankful for this precious right...."

"And in depicting "Freedom of Speech" in this way-with a young blue-collar speaker surrounded by older people who are perhaps better educated and more affluent, yet are listening intently-Rockwell conveys something else about America: respect for one's fellow man."
